While you wait for news on Frostivus and Arcanas, check out an excitingly addictive Dota 2 custom game called Brodota.

Do you need a break from Dota 2? Are your games getting a little bit too intense? Or do you perhaps simply need a change of pace? Then look no further than Brodota, a custom roguelike game that will surely get you hooked.

So what in the world is Brodota?

Brodota is a new roguelike or dungeon crawler custom arcade game created by a Chinese developer by the name of Sunlight Studio. If you enjoy playing games like The Binding of Isaac, Brodota will surely not disappoint. To be even more specific, Brodota is basically the Dota 2 version of an actual Steam game, Brotato, having similar mechanics and gameplay. You can enter co-op mode with up to three other players or you can go at it solo.

The goal of this game is simple: get to the final level and beat the big bad boss. To do so, you will need to survive 20 rounds and kill waves of monsters that become progressively difficult. Don't worry! You will have a plethora of resources to help you along the way. With good strategy and a little bit of luck, Brodota is going to be a piece of cake!

Brodota basics and fundamentals

Now that you know what the game is all about, we will explain the basics of how to play and win the game.

Choosing a hero

First, you will need to choose a hero. Each hero comes with their own specialties, but there are three main aspects to focus on.

  • S-Strike: A melee-based offense type
  • Precise: A range-based offense type
  • Arcane: A magic-based offense type

In a way, it is similar to Dota 2's strength, agility, and magic heroes. In the beginning, you only have Juggernaut, Crystal Maiden, Rubick, and Drow Ranger to choose from. Once you win some Brodota games, you can then unlock new heroes that are not from Dota 2. Most of these heroes are tastefully designed in an anime style. Bless you, anime enjoyers. In any case, they have stronger base stats than that of the default ones.

Selecting your skills and items

Once you have chosen a hero, the first round will start immediately. Kill the monsters and collect soul crystals. After completing the first round, you will head to the shop where you can use your accumulated soul crystals. This is where the exciting stuff begins. Take a look at the image above. The shop has two rows. In the first row, you can buy heroes. Well, not heroes, exactly, but their skills instead. On the other hand, the second row offers items to boost your stats and abilities in combat.

The general rule of thumb is to select skills and items that correspond to your specialty. For example, if you are going for Precise, you will want to get Dazzle who specializes in Precise abilities. You will also have to get items that boost your Precise damage. You can upgrade your heroes and items up to five levels by purchasing copies of them. On the left-hand side, you can see the summary of your stats. There are other facets to these stats, but we will just stick with the basics for now.

Finally, if you don't like anything in the shop, you can click the refresh button on the right-hand side for new sets of skills and items. This is what we meant when the game takes strategy and a little luck as you never know what kind of items you get from the rerolls. Note that you will need to spend soul crystals to refresh the store. If you play with other players, they can share the items from their shop. Hero skills, however, are not shareable.

Tiers and synergies

As you progress through the game, you will encounter better skills and items. There are five main tiers of skills and items that are color-coded similarly to neutral items in Dota 2.

  • White/Colorless: Common
  • Green: Uncommon
  • Blue: Rare
  • Purple: Epic
  • Orange: Legendary

Heroes also have faction types to form synergies or bonds. This is exactly the same as alliances in the Dota 2's autochess game, Underlords. You need to have at least two hero skills of the same bond to activate the bonuses. And since you can only have six skills, you need to carefully choose your bonds. The bonds and their bonuses are as follows:

  • Warrior: Increases attack power and health
  • Monk: Increases S-Strike damage
  • Hunter: Increases precise damage
  • Artisan: Increases arcane damage
  • Knight: Increases defense
  • Mage: Decreases skill cooldowns
  • Assassin: Increases critical rate and damage
  • Shaman: Provides bonus damage
  • Priest: Provides additional income
  • Demon-hunter: Boosts damage against bosses

Once you are fully equipped, you should have no problems getting to the final round to beat the ultimate boss. By then, you will be enjoying all the chaotic fun that Brodota has to offer.

Reaping the loot and rewards

Dungeon crawler games wouldn't be what they are without the excitement of getting loot and rewards after clearing the game. Once you defeat the final boss and complete a Brodota session, which takes at least 30 to 45 minutes, you will receive the spoils of your victory.

These rewards come in the forms of upgradeable armaments and equipment that will enhance your hero so that you can challenge more difficult levels in the game. There are currently 27 dungeon levels with options to further increase the difficulty. The higher the level, the better the rewards. There is also a gacha game within Brodota called Hell Sacrifice, which allows you to collect trinkets to further improve your combat efficiency.

Season pass and microtransactions in Brodota

Like all of Dota 2's custom games, Brodota is a free-to-play one. However, the game does offer in-game transactions and season passes for sale. While Brodota is strictly player-versus-environment (PvE), these in-game transactions offer certain advantages that will help you progress to the more advanced levels faster. That said, you can still enjoy the game to its maximum by simply playing it for free.
