Patch 7.36 introduces Innate Abilities in Dota 2: What is it and how does it work?

Rumors were indeed true.

The highly-anticipated Patch 7.36 is live and with it comes massive game-changing updates. One of them is the introduction of Innate Abilities - which may not come as a surprise with rumors that have circulated. But what exactly are Innate Abilities and how do they work in Dota 2?

What are Innate Abilities in Dota 2

To put it simply: Innates are abilities that are present on the hero for the entire game, from the very beginning of every match. Every hero has a unique Innate.

Centaur Warrunner's Innate permanently adds +40 max health every 120 seconds.
Centaur Warrunner's Innate permanently adds +40 max health every 120 seconds.

As an example, Centaur Warrunner's Innate is a passive unique to the hero. It allows Centaur to permanently gain +40 max health every 120 seconds!

How do the Innate Abilities work?

Innate Abilities have two different types. One is a unique effect and the other buffs a hero's ability, making it upgradable to level 5 instead of the standard level 4.

Examples for Innate Abilities that give heroes a unique effect:

  • Dawnbreaker's Innate reveals the whole map to allies when the sun rises.
  • Faceless Void's Innate sows enemy attack projectiles within range.

Examples for Innate Abilities that changes a hero ability to provide 5 levels.

  • Kunkka's Innate makes his Tidebringer start from level 1 and can be leveled up to level 5.
  • Legion Commander's Moment of Courage now start at level 1, and can still be upgraded four more times like normal.

We will update this page with each and every hero's Innate Ability so stay tuned!
