China toppled down powerhouses in the Asian Games

Here is the lineup for China Dota 2, the winners of Dota 2 Asian Games:

  • Wang "Ame" Chunyu
  • Lu "Somnus" Yao
  • Yang "Chalice" Shenyi
  • Zhao "XinQ" Zixing
  • Yu "皮球" Yajun (also known as Siamese.C)
  • Zhang "LaNm" Zhicheng [Coach]

China came to the Dota 2 Asian Games as one of the heavy favorites, fielding legendary names like Ame and Somnus. This former-PSG.LGD lineup once dominated the Dota 2 scene and is touted as one of the most consistent and powerful Dota 2 teams of all time.

Ame, who has been taking a long break from competitive Dota 2, shows he is still able to compete amongst the top. The team soared through the Upper Bracket and claimed the championship, scoring a gold medal for China.

Despite their legendary status, China did face some turbulence during the Playoffs. In the Upper Bracket, China suffered one match loss against Malaysia and Mongolia. Malaysia fields a notable stack with TI finalists like NothingToSay and xNova. Mongolia also has a team known for prominent chemistry. They once competed together under Lilgun and are now players of IHC Esports.

Dota 2 Asian Games surprises and upsets

While China's victory is no surprise, there are some results that came out unexpected.

Indonesia, Philippines, and Myanmar are represented by local Dota 2 stars who have been competing in the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC). They are known in the region and many expected the lineup of these Southeast Asian (SEA) teams to thrive. Names like Dreamocel, Jhocam, Mac, and more are all among the teams. However, all three bombed out at 9th-11th place.

Meanwhile, countries like Nepal and Saudi Arabia exceeded expectations and finished at 5th-8th place.
