A Dota 2 and Monster Hunter crossover was not on our 2025 bingo card

In a surprising, and a bit of a shocking twist, Dota 2 gets a rather strange crossover event with Monster Hunter, with free cosmetics.

Dota 2 is not known for its crossover events, but Valve has decided to team up with Capcom to bring Monster Hunter to the game. While Quartero's Curios came to an end just a few days ago on November 5, players were itching for something new. With no Diretide gracing us this year (and seemingly no Frostivus either), a Monster Hunter crossover was definitely unexpected but welcome.

Dota 2 x Monster Hunter: An unlikely collaboration

In the past, we have seen very minor crossover events in Dota 2. We have seen mostly announcer packs that pay homage to other games and popular media, such as Portal or Rick and Morty. Now, a brand-new event kicks off, giving players a comic, skins, and couriers, too. When logging in, players will be met with the Dota 2 x Monster Hunter informational screen.

Following this, players are treated to a comic featuring Axe and Goodkind, his trusted scribe. The comic documents a crossover between Dota 2 and Monster Hunter, where Axe documents his own kills while Goodkind attempts to determine the scope of every hero. This leads into the crossover Hero Atlas, which tracks progress and features lore.

The event itself features six Monster Hunter-themed cosmetic sets for certain Dota 2 heroes. However, each set also has 3 additional versions or tints. To craft these sets in-game, players will need to play games, harvest the materials, and complete hero hunts. These are all simply references to Monster Hunter, and players need only play Dota 2 games to gain the materials.

A courier and a new pet

The first thing players will be able to do after joining the event is craft the Palico Courier. However, another new pet exists, the Poogie. These so-called "Effigy Pets" will never leave your base, hanging around near your Effigy and following you around when you return to the safety of your fountain. When the enemy attacks, the Poogie flees to safety. There are six variations of the Poogie, as well as a few tints for the Palico Courier.

Hero cosmetics

As with any event, the most important aspect is obviously the hero cosmetics. Monster Hunter is definitely known for some amazing sets to craft, and a few of these now come to Dota 2. Dragon Knight (of course), Windranger, Techies, Anti-Mage, Beast Master, and Sniper are on the receiving end of these new sets. As mentioned previously, each set has a core, as well as 3 different colour variations for players to farm.

  • Anti-Mage (Wei) - Kirin Armor

Anti-Mage's Persona cosmetic, Wei, gets a fantastic version of the MH Kirin Armor set. With even what looks like a reference to Robot Unicorn Attack for the "Prismatic" tint.

  • Dragon Knight - Rathalos Armor

Of course, Dragon Knight had to be featured in a Dota 2 and Monster Hunter crossover event. And, yes, he does turn into Rathalos for his Dragon Forms.

For everyone who thinks Dragon Knight turning into a dragon is awesome but would be more awesome if he turned into Rathalos instead, great news: Capcom was just as excited as we were to make this happen."

Players can also decide to drop a bit of money, if they are so inclined, to acquire even more. The Expedition Pack will come with a host of materials, the Poogie, and the aforementioned Rathalos Form for DK. Purchasing the expedition pack unlocks the following:

  • Poogie
  • Rathalos Form
  • Bullfango
  • MH Music Pack
  • MH Spray Pack
  • Materials for six hero core cosmetics

Dreaming of Frostivus

The Dota 2 and Monster Hunter crossover event is an interesting but welcome one. However, while we went another year without Diretide, we can only hope that this event does not take Frostivus away from us. With over a month until the possible start of the Dota 2 holiday event, we will patiently hope that Valve keeps at least one yearly event going.

With that said, the new collaboration is a fantastic showing that Dota 2 can collaborate with the most unlikely sources to create epic cosmetics (and hopefully a few events). For now, it is time to get farming so that we can all unlock Anti-Mage's Kirin Armor "Unicorn Rainbow" tint.
