Although it has taken a backseat in recent months, Diablo IV is back with the Season of Witchcraft.

While Path of Exile 2 (PoE2) has claimed the spotlight since its release into early access on Dec. 6, Diablo IV (D4) is still in the mix. Many players of the Action Role-Playing Game (ARPG) genre will know of the problems that D4 faced originally – but its expansion, Vessell of Hatred (VoH) has certainly reinvigorated the game. Now, with the initial VoH season coming to an end, D4 players enter a new journey in the Season of Witchcraft.

Diablo IV loses its proverbial head

Seasonal themes are the name of the game in ARPGs, and D4 is no stranger to this. Creating a new character and progressing through the game’s new content is something that comes naturally to the veteran generation of ARPG players. When it comes to Diablo, the eternal war against the demons of hell comes to mind. Season 7 brings us new borrowed powers to fight against them. With heads from the Tree of Whispers missing, we call upon the aid of the Witches of Hawezar to begin our hunt.

The season quest for D4’s Season of Witchcraft will unlock three schools of magic. These all serve to assist players in their journey.

  • Eldritch
  • Psyche
  • Growth & Decay

Each of the above comes with multiple different abilities. This includes Firebat Servants for Eldritch or a Poison Frog Servant for Growth & Decay. These can be unlocked by simply completing seasonal events within the game. Alongside this will also be Lost powers, which are far rarer throughout Sanctuary. Seasonal themes give players a chance to make a plethora of new builds as they fight through the hordes of Headrotten enemies.

With great power comes greater reward

While the Tree of Whispers rewards are very hit or miss in D4, this season brings an upgrade to the bounties. Ancestral tier bounties now become available. With these bounties being consistently available, this could become a decent source of farming for some.

Gems will also have a special side in the Season of Witchcraft. A host of new powerful socketables are on the cards. Each gem can empower your witchcraft or your normal abilities in various ways, depending on which you choose to craft and add to your arsenal.

D4’s latest season also brings with it new unique items and legendary aspects. All of these can be used to further empower your builds. However, the downside to unique items in D4 is how they are sometimes required to make a build function. Unfortunately, this remains the case with the new items.

All-in-all, Diablo IV’s latest offering is sure to bring players back to the game, as every season generally does. Whether it may be those who did not feel like paying for PoE2’s early access, those who prefer D4, or simply those who prefer to dabble in both games. Season of Witchcraft is set to launch on Jan. 21, with a Developer Update stream coming our way on Jan. 16 to dive deeper into the seasonal content.
