An “old friend” makes an unexpected return in Diablo 4 Season 8.

The Diablo 4 Season 8 release date is on the horizon, and expectations from it are relatively high. Especially after Season of Witchcraft, which significantly evolved the game’s buildcrafting potential and amplified power fantasy with its unique Witchcraft abilities.

Season of Witchcraft still has a few tricks up its sleeve, like the March of the Goblin event, though most eyes are now on D4 Season 8, which interestingly enough, is set to bring back a familiar face.

Suffice it to say, Season 8 is looking to be another ambitious update in the ever-evolving Diablo 4, and here’s everything we know about it so far.

When is the Diablo 4 Season 8 release date?

Diablo 4 Season 8 will be released on April 29, 2025.

However, according to the Season of Witchcraft’s battle pass countdown, this new D4 season was initially scheduled to launch on April 15 but was later pushed back by two weeks.

Naturally, this came off as a bit of a surprise to some D4 players. Diablo’s general manager, Rod Fergusson, has since addressed the situation and provided more insight into this unexpected delay.

According to Fergusson, Diablo 4 Season 8 will feature some great updates but will take a bit longer to arrive than they had initially anticipated.

Fergusson backed up this delay by adding that it's all in the “spirit of serving the game, not the plan."

What to expect from Diablo 4 Season 8?

While more concrete details about Diablo 4 Season 8 remain paper thin, we now at least know that it will feature a familiar Diablo character.

Fergusson teased that this returning character is an "old friend," who we believe could be Tyrael from Diablo 2, who was also the leader of the First Order of the Horadrim.

Some fans may recall Lorath, the last of the Horadrim, also mentioning an “old friend” at a gravestone in Diablo 4’s campaign, who could be none other than the aforementioned Archangel of Justice.

This “old friend” could also be Deckard Cain, the last Horadric Mage, who has appeared in every mainline Diablo game except D4.

Some D4 players believe this old friend is actually the big red, aka Diablo, the lord of terror himself.

However, Diablo making a comeback now seems a bit far-fetched, especially since D4's overarching narrative currently includes another Prime Evil, Mephisto.

While they are siblings of destruction, we doubt Mephisto would want to share the spotlight with Diablo.

As for everything else, players should expect a new seasonal questline in Diablo 4 Season 8, gameplay mechanics, abilities, and hopefully new loot.

Every new Diablo 4 season makes a ton of quality-of-life enhancements as well, whether it’s reworked itemization, better loot drops, or improved XP farming. Diablo 4 Season 8 should be no different in this regard.

While the Witchcraft abilities in Season of Witchcraft were well received, many fans criticized the lack of new endgame content.

Hopefully, this will change in Diablo 4 Season 8, as rumors have been swirling about new Nightmare Dungeons.

That’s everything we currently know about Diablo 4 Season 8.

Fortunately, we won't have to wait much longer to learn more about it as Blizzard will host a Diablo 4 Season 8 Campfire Chat on March 7.
