The Fate Saga begins with Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate.

Destiny 2's The Edge of Fate is the first new expansion in the game’s upcoming multi-year The Fate Saga. It introduces new characters, stories, locations, loot, and all the usual Destiny shenanigans, coupled with an Armor 3.0 rework, world tiers, brand-new abilities, and plenty of quality-of-life changes that should make Destiny more accessible to newcomers and feel like a breath of fresh air for returning veterans.

The Edge of Fate arrives on July 15, 2025. It’s the first of the two Destiny 2 expansions scheduled to be released this year, with the latter being the Star Wars-inspired Renegades.

These are not the only major updates planned for this year. Bungie has revealed the entire Destiny 2 roadmap for 2025 and beyond — including two massive Into the Light-esque free updates —  and there’s plenty to look forward to.

The Edge of Fate takes the fight to Kepler; introduces shape-shifting Dark Matter abilities

It wouldn’t truly be a new Destiny saga without a new subclass or abilities, and The Edge of Fate isn’t looking to disappoint in this regard. During the expansion’s reveal, Bungie provided snippets of the new stunning, pale blue and brown destination Kepler, where Guardians can come across new Dark Matter abilities.

Dark Matter is vastly different from the Darkness Powers. It’s made from the Nine — the enigmatic celestial entities that play a vital role in the Edge of Fate’s story — and allows Guardians to change forms and unleash devastating elemental attacks or overcome environmental obstacles.

So far, Bungie has revealed three Dark Matter abilities — Matterspark, Relocator Cannon, and Mattermorph. Matterspark is perhaps the most interesting of the lot, allowing Guardians to morph into a "rolling ball of death" and electrocute everything. On the other hand, the Relocator Cannon and Mattermorph are traversal abilities that let players teleport and manipulate environments to make pathways.

Kepler takes inspiration from the Dreaming City. It’s full of twisting puzzles to solve and lore-ridden mysteries to uncover. It’s Destiny’s first Metroidvania-style destination that encourages exploration and replayability. Much like the other destinations, Kepler is home to new enemies, weapons, and gear.

Armor 3.0 rework brings MMO-like features to Destiny 2 The Edge of Fate

Aside from adding new story missions, exotic quests, and Dark Matter abilities, The Edge of Fate makes some fundamental changes to Destiny 2’s build-crafting. The Armor 3.0 update adds stat bonuses, which players can gain from equipping a complete armor set.

Additionally, armor and weapons are now part of a tier system with gear ranging from tiers one to five. Naturally, tier five gear offers the best stats and perks and is more suited for tackling higher-difficulty activities and challenges.

It seems each tier of loot will have unique visual and audio cues to help players identify one from another. Bungie says it’s one of the ways it’s trying to make Destiny more accessible.

Refreshed Portal screen replaces Destinations; easier access to activities

The Edge of Fate makes plenty of changes to the core game systems. For instance, the Portal is a new activity selection screen that allows players to dive into the latest campaign mission, hop into the Tower, or try one of the new activities.

Speaking of which: Solo Ops are short, 10-minute-long adventures that are tailor-made for solo players. Bungie didn’t reveal much about the adventures themselves, but it seems like the Portal will make it easier to hop into a wide array of new and popular activities.

Perhaps the most exciting part of a new expansion reveal is taking a gander at all the unique-looking weapons. While weapons weren’t the highlight of this showcase,  Bungie provided glimpses of two Nine-themed weapons coming in the Edge of Fate.

The first is the new exotic sniper rifle, New Land Beyond, which players can unlock instantly by purchasing the Destiny 2 Year of Prophecy Ultimate Bundle. The second is a sleek, rapid-fire Auto Rifle called the Giver’s Blessing with the Nine’s engravings on it.

Additionally, three weeks after the Edge of Fate update goes live, Bungie will introduce a new Shooting Range where Guardians can test out weapons and abilities to their heart’s content. It’s a place where players can spawn in with their entire raid team and test out their gear against red-bar enemies and bosses.
