MIBR stuns Team Spirit

Group B of the Group stage at ESL Pro League Season 20 saw Team Spirit and MIBR go head to head in the upper bracket semifinals. What would seem to have been an easy matchup for Team Spirit, turned into an exciting series with an unlikely outcome. MIBR defeated Team Spirit in three maps and move ahead to the Upper Bracket Final. They will now face the winner of G2 esports and 3DMAX. However, regardless of the outcome of the Upper Bracket finals, MIBR have secured for themselves a spot in the ESL Pro League Season 20 Playoffs.

It started with MIBR’s pick of Ancient. Despite being their pick of choice, Ancient was an embarrassing show for MIBR. They lost Ancient 2-13, partly due to an exceptional performance by Donk. There was not a single MIBR player who managed to reach double-digits, further amplifying the team’s lack of preparation on this map.

However, they bounced back spectacularly on Nuke, where they had eight rounds on the CT side. The 6-0 start on Nuke ensured, MIBR had no problems in closing the map. MIBR won the second map with a 13-7 victory to level the series. The entire series came down to the final map where the two teams went head to head in a nail-biting finish that went through overtime.

Anubis saw both teams step up their game with neither letting their foot off the pedal. The game was neck to neck with a 6-6 first half. In the second half, MIBR had a strong 4-0 start which moved to a 6-2 start. However, with four consecutive round victories, Team Spirit pulled it back to take it to overtime. Despite fans’ feeling Team Spirit might have regained the momentum.

In Overtime, however, MIBR had the upper hand and they won four of the five rounds. MIBR shocked Team Spirit who boast some of the best players in the world. Previously, Team Spirit had a dominating 2-0 victory over Wildcard while MIBR took down 9z team in the Upper Bracket quarterfinals.

The ESL Pro League Season 20 features 32 teams in total competing for their share of the $750,000 prize pool. The tournament is an offline event with a triple-elimination format for the group stage.
