A best of one victory, but it was still a win.
The IEM Rio 2024 tournament kicked off in style with some off the best teams in action. For Counter-Strike viewers, the tournament has already thrown a few surprises with a major upset right on Day 1. Today, Heroic defeated G2 esports in their opening match of the tournament. Here’s how it all panned out.
IEM Rio 2024 features a best of one opener match which gives teams a perfect opportunity to cause a few upsets. Heroic took down G2 esports on Dust 2 today with a 13-10 score. While the score might signal a very close match, it was actually a roller coaster of emotions for fans who were looking for some exciting Counter Strike action. Heroic started strong - very strong in fact, to amass a 10-2 lead. However, in teh second half, they almost came close to losing their entire lead as they attempted to ensure that they would be able to survive the lead. Eventually, Heroic won with a 13-10 score securing a step up in the competition.

G2 wake up - but it’s a bit too late
G2 managed to secure just two CT rounds in the first half, that too much late in the half. Heroic won the first five rounds to secure a 5-0 lead and then managed to clump together rounds to continue their lead. TeSeS was a monster on Dust 2 ending the map with 29 frags to his name. With a 1.83 rating, TeSeS had a massive impact, not just on the scoreboard, but also altering the way G2 approached the game.
G2’s first half was nothing to write home about. There were moments of individual brilliance with both malbsMd and mONESy stepping up on two different occasions. But the slow start to the first half meant G2 was always playing catch. That’s not a position a pro player wants to be in a best of one situation.
Th second half saw G2 step up on their T side. They took advantage of Heroic’s mixture of aggressive play and later the existing momentum to secure a sizeable flow to their gameplay. With the T side shenanigans, G2 managed to climb up to 10 rounds, unfortunately, Heroic secured the win in a few more rounds to win the series.
