And has fun trying different games on it.

A Counter-Strike map is an almost real-life replica of a place or a visual representation of what it would look like. From Castles in Cobblestone to Market in Mirage or an under-construction site on Vertigo, there’s a lot of variety in Counter-Strike maps. One of the all-time classics, however, is cs_office. And as any office setup would go, it has many many computers. In a fun twist, a YouTuber has recreated a computer from cs_office to see how it holds up in today’s world.

YouTuber recreates cs_office computer

After doing some research, the computer from the cs_office map seems to be very similar to the DELL Dimension 8400 Desktop that released around 2003. The desktop retailed for around $899 after applying a $200 discount.

But it was not just the outer looks that were drawn in for the comparison. In Counter-Strike, you can shoot the computers, which would remove the outer panel, offering you a glimpse in what its packing. And that’s exactly what Bringus Studios did. A quick glimpse at the insides and we can see video cards, sound cards, a DVD drive, and a motherboard. However, the motherboard was not a Dell Dimension 8400 PC.

A reverse Google search of the motherboard component revealed that it was an ASUS A8V Deluxe. Unfortunately, for the YouTuber, there aren’t many ASUS A8V Deluxe motherboards on sale. The only one on sale on eBay would not power on and that put an end to dreams of installing that particular motherboard on the Dell Dimension 8400. The YouTuber went on to buy the peripherals that were visible on the office table - and this was much easier to do than trying to fit the ASUS motherboard into the Dell PC.

The computer has a NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200 Graphics card which launched in October 2001. It has an area of 128 mm² and 57 million transistors. It retailed for around $149 at the time, although it would almost surely not be available anywhere now. After many changes and adjustments, we finally got the PC going. The channel tried Half-Life on the PC first, and it was passable experience with around 50-60 FPS. The FPS would vary massively depending on the game’s setting and it event went down to 30 FPS at some point in time. But running Half Life on the computer was a success, which is what he set out to do.

One by one, he tried out different games - some with success, some without success.

  • Half Life - Pass
  • Half-Life 2 - Works with Low settings and 640 * 480.
  • Team Fortress 2 - 30-40 FPS
  • GTA San Andreas - Not playable
  • Portal 2 - No
  • Doom  - No
  • Doom 3 - Yes
  • Quake 4 - After some hiccups - it ran smoothly

Team Fortress 2Works (Low FPS)

PortalWorks

After some tweaks to Half Life 2, with all video settings set to low and the resolution down to 640 * 480, we finally got the game running. It actually worked at a respectable level, even running up to 100 FPS at some points during the gameplay.

Did it run Counter-Strike Source?

The next game that he tried was Counter-Strike Source, the home of the computer he built. After changing the resolution he jumped in to cs_office. It wasn’t as good as Half-Life 2, peaking at around 30-40 FPS. At some points, it would go down to 20 FPS as well, but the game did run smoothly.

Portal was the next game of choice and it had no problems running on the computer. While it was around 30-40 FPS, it was also at medium to high settings which was a huge success. Team Fortress 2 also ran pretty good although the YouTuber ran a very old version of TF2.

GTA San Andreas, Quake 4, Doom 3 and more

GTA San Andreas was a big disaster and while the game loaded, it was not playable at all. Portal 2 was also something that did not work and neither did Doom. As we head into the latter years of game releases, most of the newer games did not run properly. Surprisingly, Doom 3 worked fine and it was actually quite playable.

The final game that he tried was Quake 4 and he input a Disk into the CD, which is when the Computer had a long beeping sound even as Quake 4 launched. Despite the initial hiccups, the game actually ran pretty smoothly, and there was actual gameplay (albeit a bit choppy).

About Bringus Studios

Bringus Studios is a tech YouTube channel where the weirdest computer setups are put together. The channel brings up obscure Computer specification ideas and puts them to the test to see what kind of games or applications they can run. The off-beat content ideas have been extremely popular with a large section of the community.

Content ideas like “Secretly gaming with AR Glasses in the public” have been a huge hit garnering over 3.5 million views. They’ve also tried Counter-Strike 2 on PS4, installed SteamOS on a Google Meet Video Conference computer and much more. This particular video about recreating the cs_office computer is definitely one of the more unique ones the channel has made and one that will capture your attention if you are a CS fan.
