huNter- discusses the comeback after a 0-13 loss

After a disastrous 0-13 start to the series, G2 managed to bounced back to take a 2-1 win over Team Liquid at the World Finals. For the NA side, their aggressive pieces simply fell flat against the onslaught from G2. Nikola "NiKo" Kovač and Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov topped the charts for G2. Meanwhile Russel “Twistzz” Van Dulken's 50-frag performance went unrewarded.

"After losing [at Rio] and then here 13-0, we knew it was not easy to reset" - G2 huNter-

Following the win over Liquid, G2's Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač talked to Esports.gg to discuss the series. Here's what the rifler had to say.

Esports.gg - We've got to talk about the elephant in the room - the 0-13 loss. What went wrong?

G2 huNter-: They played very well. We let them do whatever they wanted in the beginning, we gave them a lot of space. They're really good players and they took advantage of it. That was the main issue. On the second round we had a chance to break them and win the round and it could have been different, but they were the better team, and we were very bad.

When you win 2-1 people will not talk too much about the loss, they'll talk more of the win.

Esports.gg - How do you approach the rest of the series after such a loss?

"I mean Ancient was their pick, we had our pick Inferno, we feel confident and comfortable on the map. Our Inferno practice has gone very well recently and we try to forget what happens on Ancient. We have experienced players on the team and young guys who are hungry, and after you lose 13-0 you want to give your best to win the series. When you win 2-1 people will not talk too much about the loss, they'll talk more of the win."

"I didn't play individually well, not the way I should play at least" - G2 huNter-

Esports.gg - It was a streaky second and third map and excluding Ancient the series looks great for you and G2. How important is it to keep momentum, and how much of a factor is CS2's economy in building a streak?

"The economy is a big factor in CS2, if you know they're on eco and you're bringing the money with four to five alive its easy to play the half. I'm pretty happy we won both second halves without losing many rounds, that's great mentality from us. I didn't play individually well, not the way I should play at least, but NiKo and m0NESY were playing great and Snax was calling very, very good on Mirage to finish."

Esports.gg - There's a lot of talk about how teams are approaching this event, especially with the Major around the corner. How is G2 approaching BLAST and how much confidence are you guys building after this win given the Rio exit?

"After what happened in Rio when we got smashed in two games and finished last, you cannot say that we came to this event to save strats for the Major or something like that. We need to show good CS here, we need to bring back confidence we lost in Rio. After losing there and then here 13-0, we knew it was not easy to reset and play these two maps. We will try our best and if we have a chance to play for the end, we'll do it."

Map 1 - Ancient - Liquid annihilate G2

When Ancient started, G2 were completely absent from the server. NAF started things off with a pistol round quad-kill and Liquid never looked back. With a perfect CT side, Liquid quickly locked up a 13-0 win.

Map 2 - Inferno - G2 reply with a CT masterclass

After the high of Ancient, Inferno was a drastic shift. Captain Twistzz was still fragging out, but YEKINDAR and ultimate fell by the wayside. The first half saw both teams neck and neck, but once G2 moved to the CT side, it was over for the NA side. With YEKINDAR and ultimate netting zero kills each on the T side, Liquid's attack had no bite. G2 quickly tied the series up 1-1.

Map 3 - Mirage - G2 go back to back to lock in World Finals win

Mirage was a perfect replication of the story from Inferno. Twistzz nearly single-handedly kept Liquid in the game in the first half, locking in another 6-6 half. But once again G2 popped off in the second half as NiKo and m0NESY combined for 38.

G2 now move into the upper bracket of the BLAST Premier World finals to face. Meanwhile Liquid drop down to the elimination game where they'll face the loser of Vitality vs Spirit. Stay tuned to esports.gg for more BLAST Premier World Finals coverage directly from Singapore.
