Chess champion Fabiano Caruana joins Team Liquid: “We have a lot of the same values in terms of integrity, competitive drive, striving for excellence, and, of course, winning.”

Esports organization Team Liquid has expanded into the world of competitive chess with the official signing of four-time U.S. chess champion Fabiano Caruana. Now competing under the Team Liquid banner, Caruana will kick things off with the 2025 Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters event. Here's what Caruana himself had to say about the signing.

According to Caruana, he and Team Liquid share the same values of integrity, competitive drive, excellence, and striving for the win. Therefore, he's excited to be part of the esports organization. Caruana also believes that his partnership with Team Liquid will help bring chess to a wider audience.

"I am really excited to join Team Liquid, an organization with a long heritage of success," Caruana said, referring to Team Liquid's well-known esports history and victories in Dota 2, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), and more. "We have a lot of the same values in terms of integrity, competitive drive, striving for excellence, and, of course, winning."

Co-CEO of Team Liquid, Steve Arhancet, agreed. He also noted how the organization is entering chess with top-tier players since a major part of the company’s mission. Arhancet commended Caruana’s dedication and respect within the community as well, adding that Caruana and Team Liquid will bring a "fresh take on chess content" to both new and existing fans.

"I've gotten to know Fabi over the last few months, and I immediately got a sense for how much of a fit he is for our organization due to how we share the same values and have similar goals," Arhancet said. "We are entering chess with the absolute best players, because winning is critical to our mission as a company. “Fabi is a seasoned competitor who has excelled in the new formats through the work he puts in to succeed, and that's why he's a universally respected member of the community and a great ambassador for Team Liquid."

Caruana signing shows Team Liquid’s commitment to the competitive chess scene. In an official announcement, Team Liquid also noted how having chess as a game at the Esports World Cup makes the ecosystem of chess esports more stable. The announcement also revealed that global trading firm IMC will be the primary sponsor, with their logo featured on Caruana's jersey for CCT and EWC events.
