Joining million bestsellers

Black Myth: Wukong is now joining the 10 million club, sold over 10 million units globally. This group includes titles like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, Elden Ring, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom—all of which have seen massive success worldwide. Although recent years have seen several made-in-China hits like Genshin Impact, and PUBGM, these have mostly been mobile games.

When it comes to buyout games, few Chinese companies have achieved such success, with the Dyson Sphere Program being one of the few exceptions. The developer of Black Myth: Wukong, Game Science, is now the first Chinese company to develop a buyout game that has reached this milestone. This success is a reflection of Chinese-made games making their mark on the global market.

A predominantly Chinese market success

While Black Myth: Wukong has achieved impressive sales worldwide, its success is mainly concentrated in the Chinese market. As of this writing, the game has 407,240 reviews on Steam, with a staggering 396,074 of them in Chinese, leaving only 11,166 in other languages. This shows that the primary audience is Chinese players, while the Western market has contributed only a small portion of the sales.

The game’s peak concurrent player count often occurs around 2 PM UTC, which is 8 PM in China, aligning with the post-dinner time. After this peak, which reached as high as 2,415,714 players, the numbers gradually drop to around 250,000, about one-tenth of the peak.

Moreover, the game has nearly four million followers on Bilibili, China’s largest video-sharing site (similar to YouTube). Every video related to the game has over five million views, with the latest released trailer exceeding 18 million views. In contrast, the game’s YouTube channel has fewer than 100,000 subscribers, and its video views are about one-tenth of those on Bilibili. This highlights the game’s much higher popularity in China compared to other regions.

Maintaining strong reviews on Steam

Beyond the focus on the Chinese market, the game itself is of high quality. Black Myth: Wukong has maintained a 96% positive rating on Steam, showing its popularity among players, especially for its graphics and art design, which have received widespread praise. However, the game has also faced some criticism. Negative reviews have pointed out issues like "invisible walls" that hinder exploration, weak map guidance, and a combat system that some feel lacks impact. Despite these criticisms, the game’s overall reputation remains strong. Notably, famous game developer Hideo Kojima (known for Death Stranding) shared the news of Black Myth: Wukong's sales milestone today.

A major breakthrough for China’s gaming industry

The success of Black Myth: Wukong is not just a commercial victory; it will likely become a significant milestone for China’s gaming industry. This game proves that Chinese developers can compete at the highest level on the global stage, even with buyout games.

This success is expected to inspire many developers in China, highlighting the vast potential of buyout games. It may also set a new standard for the quality of future Chinese buyout games and serve as a milestone for China’s gaming industry entering the global market. As Black Myth: Wukong continues to sell well, the developers are likely to address player feedback and further improve the gaming experience.
