VK Gaming closed out a tense win in game nine.
VK Gaming won the ALGS Midseason Playoffs, closing out a Match Point win in 9 games. They were crowned champions in front of a sold out Esports World Cup audience, taking home the lions share of the $2,000,000 prize pool.
Hailing from APAC South, VK Gaming weren't one of the pre-tournament favourites. They pipped home heroes Team Falcons, and in-form Ninjas in Pyjamas to the title.
With this win, in addition to the $600,000 prizing, VK Gaming have also booked their spot at the upcoming ALGS Championship in Sapporo, Japan.
VK Gaming take ALGS Midseason Playoffs title
VK Gaming are the second team from APAC South to win an ALGS title, following in the footsteps of DarkZero. They started the day as they meant to go on, winning the days opening game. They didn't pick up another win until the final ninth game. However, they narrowly missed out on winning in the prior game, being foiled at the last by Gen.G.
This win is a valuable reminder of the strength in the lesser discussed regions in the ALGS. A lot of focus is always placed on heavy hitters like Falcons, Alliance and 100 Thieves. But, there are dozens of teams capable of a LAN win - with eight teams reaching match point.
Some of the pre-event favourites, including Alliance, NAVI, Fnatic and TSM never even reached match point.

Up next: Pro League Split 2
As part of the reshuffled ALGS Year 5 schedule teams will now turn their focus towards the second Pro League Split which begins in late August. Fans can also probably expect a lot of roster changes in the ALGS. If history is anything to go by, even VK Gaming could have a different ALGS roster by the time we next see them compete!
The retirement of iiTzTimmy could trigger a big range of swaps in the Americas, even as fans wish for a return of former NRG player Sweetdreams. He's competed with both Sikezz and Gild before, so you never know!
