esports.gg spoke to Carter of Sentinels ahead of the ALGS Midseason Playoffs.
Sentinels have returned to Apex Legends ahead of the Esports World Cup, and have picked up the former MPIRE roster of Carter, Rileymekinac and LOTR31. This roster have been one of the breakout stars of ALGS Year 5 so far. They impressed at the ALGS Midseason Playoffs, finishing 7th.
That event gave them a good start towards qualification to the ALGS Championship, which is now confirmed to be returning to Sapporo, Japan.
Moving to Sentinels is a sign that this roster is now considered one of the stronger teams in the Americas region, and the ALGS Midseason Playoffs is a great chance for Sentinels and Carter to really establish themselves ahead of the pinnacle of Apex competition later this season.

While the announcement that the ALGS Championship is returning to Sapporo was well received by fans - for players announcements like these are also hugely important. Players want to compete on the biggest stage, and last years event in Sapporo was the most iconic and largest scale event in ALGS history.

"It's unreal. Knowing that Champs is back in Japan sparked something within me. I'm super excited about it."

Sentinels are a dark horse for the EWC title
Sentinels have a good chance at booking a spot at the event. Their ALGS Open performance earned them valuable Championship points. However, Carter feels they are still a dark horse team for the event.
"Honestly, I genuinely believe we're kind of like a dark horse team. I don't feel like we're a favorite, but I don't feel like we're hated on. We're kind of just stuck in this awkward spot, but I think we'll prove ourselves at the EWC"
Keeping up with the meta has been a big part of how Sentinels have broken out this season.
"I think we've done a very great job of just keeping up with the meta and just being able to adapt to all scenarios. I also think we were really great at keeping each other accountable for mistakes and I feel like we improved pretty fast. So I think that's one of our strong suits. We can play a large legend pool and thats worked really in our favour with Legend Bans."

Year 5 changes were perfect for breakthrough teams
ALGS Year 5 presented a great opportunity for new teams. Legend Bans and the addition of both Broken Moon and E-District to the ALGS rotation shook things up. Carter agrees that this presented a huge window for some new faces to make progress in the scene.
"Oh, 100%! [E-District] honestly is probably the best map in competitive since Worlds Edge. Both E-District, Broken Moon and the Legend bans has all been great for us."
With the huge ten games per pool play stage, more Legends than ever will come into play today. Sentinels and Carter are particularly excited to use Caustic in the competition here.
"Caustic is going to be huge for us. We're very, very dominant on Caustic, and I think he'll be very good in the back end games. Lifeline will be very good too. We haven't got much time on her, I know she'll be very good, especially in the 10-game set. As I said, Legend-pool wise, we're very flexible. So, I think we'll adapt pretty easily to any of the bans."
Sentinels and Carter will hope to prove their dark horse credentials as the ALGS Midseason Playoffs at the EWC gets underway later today.
