If you want to smith, you’ll need coal.
As part of Grow a Garden’s Smithing Event, players can craft a bunch of new things in the game, with coal as the most common requirement.
There are various types of coal in the game, and if you can have lots of it, it’s easier to craft various event-exclusive stuff that will help make your garden look better and more valuable, such as pets, cosmetic items, gears, and seeds.
Coal is considered the most highly sought-after item in the game right now, especially if you want to make the most out of the Smithing Event. If you don’t know how to get coal yet, this guide will share the methods of getting one or more.
Collecting coals in Grow a Garden
You can get coals in three ways: by submitting specific items to the event’s forge, equipping a Smithing Dog pet, and getting one as a reward for the treasure digging mini-game.
Of all these methods, using the forge is definitely the best way, as you can guarantee at least a Common Coal from it. You can find the forge right at the center of the Smithing Event area.
Crafting coals in the forge

To make a coal through the forge, you can submit one type of the following items to each side of the forge:
Feel free to submit any of these items, and once you get three, you’ll get a coal of random rarity.
Smithing Dog

Under the Smithing Event’s Craft Pets section, you can get the Rare Smithing Dog for two Rare Coals, one Dog pet, and 3 million Sheckles. Once equipped, the Smithing Dog will occasionally give you a random type of coal, which is a good way to get the item passively in addition to the forge.
Treasure Digging

Digging for treasures is the least efficient way to get coal. This is because you only dig for a limited number of times, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll get coal right away. There are other rewards that you can get from digging other than coal, but it’s still worth doing if you have nothing else to do.
How to get better coal in Grow a Garden?
There’s no easy way to get coals that are better than Common Coals in the game. The rarity of the coal you’ll receive in the forge is completely random, but according to community forums, the chances are as follows:
- Rare Coal: 30%
- Legendary Coal: 10%
- Divine Coal: 5%
The rarity of the items you submit to the forge doesn’t really matter. If you’re lucky, you might get a Divine Coal even if all you submit are Common items. The most important thing here is to collect as many gears, eggs, and fruits as you can if you want to farm the best number of coals for the Smithing Event.
