With AZ returning in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, let’s revisit the role of this tall enigmatic person in the lore of the mainline games.

After the recent announcements about the new Pokémon Legends game set in the Kalos region, we get a second look at AZ, the man with an imposing figure who kept looking for his lost Floette in Pokémon X and Y.

It’s been more than a decade since we journeyed around Kalos and immersed ourselves in the region’s rich history, so it would be better if we refresh our minds and give the younger fans some context about AZ and his connection with the upcoming game.

AZ is the former king of Kalos who received a curse of eternal life for creating a weapon of mass destruction that ended the lives of countless humans and Pokémon 3,000 years ago.

Before becoming an immortal, AZ was a doting owner for his Floette, a Pokémon he received as a gift from his mother. Then, a war in his time broke out, and soldiers forced AZ’s Floette to fight in the frontlines where it perished.

In a fit of rage and grief, AZ built a machine to revive his dead Floette. The machine was a success, but despite achieving his goal, AZ didn’t feel satisfied, as he wanted something more—to end the war and bring justice to what he went through.

AZ converted his machine into a weapon that can fire massive amounts of energy and destroy anything in its path. The man activated the weapon, obliterating the armies on both sides of the conflict.

Floette found out that AZ sacrificed many Pokémon to create the machine that brought it back to life, so it left, leaving AZ depressed and alone. What’s even worse is that the weapon cursed AZ with immortality, and during the events of Pokémon X and Y, he was doomed to wander around Kalos for thousands of years in search of his lost Pokémon.

When Lysandre, the boss of Team Flare used AZ’s weapon in an attempt to wipe out most life on earth, he captured AZ to retrieve the key that can activate the weapon. The protagonist foiled Lysandre’s plan and freed AZ, who then expressed his gratitude.

Later, after challenging the protagonist who became Kalos’ new Champion, AZ’s Floette suddenly appears from the sky, reuniting with his owner in a heartfelt moment of reconciliation.

Based on several pieces of information revealed at the Pokémon Presents, AZ and Floette are again living together and running a hotel in Lumiose City.

The man finally refined his style by wearing formal attire, and it seems like his age is finally catching up to him as he uses a cane for support. Still, he looks way happier than before, and hopefully, we can see more of him once we finally unfold the story of Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
