Take on Mega Salamence with our Raid guide.

Mega Salamence is back in Pokémon GO Mega Raids from November 11 until November 18. Mega Salamence is the third best Dragon-type Raid attacker in the entire game, sitting behind Mega Garchomp and Mega Rayquaza.

You might already have some high IV Salamence in Pokémon GO, after the Bagon Community Day in April this year. That means that these Mega Raids are a great chance to get enough Mega Energy to Mega Evolve all the Salamence you collected that day. Those Pokémon will hopefully have the Community Day move, Outrage. If not - you can hold fire on evolving those Pokémon until December's Community Day.

Here's everything you need to know to take on Mega Salamence in Pokémon GO.

Best Mega Salamence counters in Pokémon GO:

Mega Salamence has a weakness to Dragon, Fairy and Rock-types. In addition, it has a 2x weakness to Ice-types. This makes Ice-type Pokémon a great choice to take on Mega Salamence.

Mega Salamence also has lot of resistances. It double resists Grass and Ground-types, as well as resisting Bug, Fire, Fighting and Water-types. You might notice that this is exactly the same as for Mega Rayquaza. The team you used for that Raid, will work perfectly here if you still have it saved.

Here are the best Mega Salamence counters in Pokémon GO:

Mamoswine
Powder Snow & Avalanche
Origin Forme Dialga
Dragon Breath & Roar of Time
Cetitan
Ice Shard & Avalanche
Mega Gardevoir
Charm & Triple Azel
Baxcalibur
Ice Fang & Avalanche
Galarian Darmanitan
Ice Fang & Avalanche
Mega Rayquaza
Dragon Tail & Outrage
Mega Glalie
Frost Breath & Avalanche
Mega Garchomp
Dragon Tail & Outrage
Mega Abomasnow
Powder Snow & Weather Ball
Aurorus
Frost Breath & Weather Ball
Kyurem
Dragon Breath & Glaciate

Naturally, with Mega Salamence having a double weakness to Ice-type attacks, almost all the best countera are Ice-type Pokémon. Pokémon like Aurorus, Galarian Darmanitan and Mamoswine are readily avaliable in Pokémon GO, which should help every Trainer get a good team together to take on this Raid.

Mega Rayquaza, who was also in Raids not too long ago, is the best Mega Pokémon you can use. While it does not have an Ice-type attack, it targets Mega Salamence's Dragon-type weaknesses. Be warned though, Mega Rayquaza is also weak to Dragon-type moves.

Additionally, Origin Forme Dialga is also a great counter. If you don't have that Pokémon, it will return soon during the Into the Wild and GO Wild Area events.

Can Salamence be shiny in Pokémon GO?

Yes, the Salamence you encounter after the Raid can be Shiny.

Mega Evolutions to get you more Salamence candy in Pokémon GO

Mega Evolutions can help you get more candy and XL candy with every catch. Having a mega level 3 active that boosts candy for Dragon and Flying-types will give you an extra 2 candy per catch, as well as a 25% bonus to your XL candy chance.

Here are the Pokémon you can Mega Evolve to get more Salamence candy in Pokémon GO:

  • Ampharos
  • Sceptile
  • Altaria
  • Salamence
  • Latias
  • Latios
  • Rayquaza

  • Aerodactyl

Both Mega Rayquaza and Mega Garchomp are great counters to Mega Salamence and will both provide extra candy after the Raid.

How many trainers do I need to beat Mega Salamence in Pokémon GO?

Thanks to Mega Salamence having a double weakness to Ice, it is reasonably easy to take down. It might be possible for very high level trainers to beat this Raid solo. However, for safety, we suggest at least two Trainers to take on this Mega Salamence in Pokémon GO. This assumes you have very strong Ice-type Pokémon.

If you want to play it safe, aim for at least four Trainers. Don't forget, the faster you defeat Mega Salamence, the more Mega Energy you will get.
