Choosing Pokémon type
First off, you will need to choose a Pokémon type. Have a card you want your deck centered around? Great, make sure to choose that type when beginning.
If you have a Charizard you want to center the deck around then you would choose fire. If you had a Blastoise you want to center the deck around then you would choose water. You get the picture.
Having around 15 Pokémon cards in your deck is standard, leaving you room for five Trainer cards. However, make sure you include quite a few Basic Pokémon. The last thing you want is a deck that is all evolutions without their starter cards.
Decks only allow two of the same card. If you have an entire Charizard evolution, then having a deck with two of each card will be perfect for giving you better chances at getting the popular fire Pokémon out on the field.
It is also important to include Normal-type Pokémon in your deck if you have any. These Pokémon can use any type of energy, making them perfect for battling with.
Choosing Trainer cards
Trainer cards are also essential to a Pokémon TCG Pocket deck. Having only regular Pokémon cards would hurt you unless you draw the most immaculate firsthand.
You must be smart about choosing your Trainer cards, though, as many will directly influence how your deck is played.
Some Trainer cards, like Blaine, are meant for specific types of decks. Having a card that helps a Grass-type deck in your arsenal when you have a Fire-type deck would do nothing for you.
It is important to strategically think through what Trainer cards you plan on adding. Some cards, though, will work great with any deck and can be used in various ways.
