When Mauga officially entered Overwatch 2 Season 8, he became immediately playable to those with the Premium Battle Pass. However, there are also ways to unlock Mauga for free in Overwatch 2.
How to unlock Mauga for free in Overwatch 2
To obtain Mauga for free in Overwatch 2, you must reach tier 45 of the basic Season 8 Battle Pass. Progress through the different tiers by completing matches against other players. You can also complete your daily, weekly, seasonal, and event challenges to gain some bonus Battle Pass XP.
Similar to previous seasons of Overwatch 2, if you don't have time to unlock Mauga through the Battle Pass, then you'll be able to get him after completing his future hero challenges. The screenshot below is an example featuring Ramattra. This hero launched in 2022. If you don't have him yet, then you can complete his hero challenges to unlock him for free.

If you want to play as Mauga right away in Overwatch 2 Season 8, then you must get a paid version of the Overwatch 2 Season 8 Battle Pass. The Premium Battle Pass requires 1,000 Overwatch Coins, which is $9.99 USD.

You can test out Mauga at the start of Overwatch 2 Season 8 as well. To do this, jump into the Battle of the Beasts event. The only available tank hero in this limited-time game mode is Mauga. This event ends on Dec. 19.
