Fix the annoying game server connection failed error in Overwatch 2
It’s the evening, and you’re settling down for a few matches on Overwatch 2, only to get hit by the dreaded “game server connection failed error.” It’s night over. Or is it? Below is our guide on how to fix the Overwatch 2 game server connection failed error, and get you back in the fight!
Overwatch 2 game server connection failed error fix
The game server connection failed error occurs for one of two reasons:
- A client side (your PC) connection issue, caused by internet outages, blocked connections, or other connectivity problems
- A host side (Blizzard) connection issue, that is either an interruption in service or a new update
As a result, there’s multiple ways to fix this issue.

Client side issues with connecting to OW2 are relatively simple to troubleshoot. Start off with the basics, like restarting your PC, restarting your router, and checking your internet service provider (ISP) isn’t having connection issues.
Next make sure Overwatch 2 is whitelisted in your antivirus software and other security apps, including Windows Security. Updates to both Overwatch 2 and your antivirus software or OS can change or remove the whitelists, so make sure you’re up to date.
Finally, make sure that there’s not an issue with Blizzard’s side of things. Run the repair tool in the Battle.net launcher to fix any internal issues, and check Downdetector to see if there’s a wider problem. If there is, try the below fixes.

Unfortunately, if there’s a host side issue with Overwatch 2, there’s not a lot you can do (unless you happen to have a direct line to Bobby Kotick). These errors usually happen during scheduled down time. Or during the launch of a new patch, such as the Overwatch 2 Season 3 update. As a result, patience and perseverance is your best option!
