Make sure your armor is in tip-top shape.
One of the first people you can speak to at your camp in Monster Hunter Wilds is Gemma, the Smithy who can forge and upgrade all of your weapons and armor. While the game encourages you to upgrade your weapons very early on, the same can't be said for armor. You can craft new armor from resources you find in the early stages of the world, but you're completely unable to upgrade those gear pieces.
Fortunately, you're not missing anything, as the ability to upgrade armor isn't available from the get-go in Monster Hunter Wilds. Unfortunately, you'll have to wait a decent amount of time before you're able to apply any sort of upgrade to armor.

How to upgrade armor in Monster Hunter Wilds
You are not able to upgrade armor until you reach the Oilwell Basin part of the map. This should take around five-six hours of in-game playtime to reach, but it can be quicker if you're breezing through the main storyline quests. Once you reach this part of the game, you need to complete this specific mission: "Chapter 2-2, The Eye of the Storm."
After that mission is complete, you'll meet some specific characters who teach you the ways of upgrading armor. This is all spoken out in dialogue, so you shouldn't miss it if you're listening after every mission is completed.
With this quest complete, you can go to the Smithy Gemma at your camp and press the option to "Forge/Upgrade Armor." Here, click on any piece of armor you have equipped, which is marked by a small checkmark on the armor's icon, and a new drop-down menu will appear. Previously, clicking the armor's icon just allowed you to forge it.
Now, you have the ability to both upgrade it and forge a new piece of armor. Naturally, you want to select the "Upgrade" option, which leads you to a new screen. Here, you have to input a certain number of Armor Spheres to upgrade your chosen piece of armor. The more Armor Spheres you put into an upgrade, the more it can level up and the higher its stats will be.
Every subsequent level of a piece of armor requires a certain number of points to reach. Every Armor Sphere you input gives you more points towards that amount. So, if you want to reach a certain level, keep inputting Armor Spheres until you reach the level you want.
Of course, that's easier said than done, as Armor Spheres aren't overly easy to come by in Monster Hunter Wilds. Mostly, they are received for completing quests as a reward. However, you can also craft Armor Spheres in the endgame.
Now that you know how to upgrade armor in Monster Hunter Wilds, you might be curious about how to switch between weapons, as that's been another hot topic in the community.
