Two words always on your screen, but what do they mean?

Whether you're playing a Quick Play or enjoying some Road to the Show in MLB The Show 25, you'll often see two abbreviated words on your screen: ENG and CFD. These two words are next to different colored bars and appear when you're hitting and pitching. Throughout a game, the two bars next to the words will go up and down, making it unclear how they affect the gameplay that's happening.

Veteran MLB The Show players will know exactly what ENG and CFD mean and what the bars next to them indicate. However, if you're a new player or maybe you're hopping back in MLB The Show after a long hiatus, you'll likely be confused about this mechanic. Fortunately, the guide below has everything you need to know about ENG and CFD in MLB The Show 25.

ENG and CFD are abbreviations for the words Energy and Confidence, respectively. The bars next to each abbreviated word indicate how much energy and confidence a pitcher currently has.

The higher the green Energy bar is, for example, likely means the pitcher just came into the game or hasn't thrown many pitches, so they'll have more oomph and control over their pitches. On the other hand, the blue Confidence bar indicates how the pitcher is feeling about their stuff at the current point in time. If a pitcher just gave up a homerun, their Confidence bar will be lower than it was when they came into the game.

Even though you can see the two ENG and CFD bars while you're hitting, batters aren't affected by these bars. Your hitter doesn't have separate ENG and CFD meters for their at-bat. However, you're able to see the bars while hitting so you have a better idea of how the current pitcher is feeling.

If an opposing pitcher has a high Energy bar but a low Confidence bar, they're more likely to throw strikes since they don't want to walk batters and throw bad pitches. However, if a pitcher has a low Energy bar, you can expect them to throw slightly slower than they normally would.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you're pitching, these bars generally indicate when you should think about going to the bullpen. Once your starter has their Energy or Confidence bars depleted, they won't be nearly as effective and a bullpen arm should come into the game. Of course, if your starter or a long-reliever is on cruise control during a game, you can use the ENG and CFD meters to gauge their status so you know just how strong they are deep into the later innings.

ENG and CFD bars only appear in offline modes in MLB The Show 25. So if you play any Diamond Dynasty or against your friend online, you won't get the benefit of the bars.
