Discover the tragic story that led the Mimic down a dark path of manipulation, destruction, and death in Five Nights at Freddy’s.
The Mimic plays a major role in Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic, the upcoming game in one of the most iconic horror franchises of all time. Set sometime after the events of Security Breach, this game promises to go deeper into The Mimic’s past, shedding light on its origins and how it came to be a key player in the FNAF universe.
FNAF Mimic origins
In the 1970s, Edwin Murray, an engineer at Fazbear Entertainment, a company running numerous pizzerias and entertainment venues for children, created an experimental artificial intelligence bot called the Mimic. He designed this “machine” with a single purpose: to observe and copy any movement it saw, so it could care for his son, David Murray, while Edwin worked.
Tragically, a van struck David, and he lost his life. Consumed by grief, Edwin grabbed a pipe and smashed the Mimic repeatedly until only twisted metal pieces remained. After some time with David mimicking simple activities and hand signs, the Mimic started to absorb more complex behaviors like painting, playing, and even some emotional responses, which made him more independent. The Mimic is highly resourceful and demonstrates a level of strategic thinking.

Clown disguise
True to its name, the Mimic imitates nearly anything it chooses. In Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic, it takes the form of a clown, which is reminiscent of the classic jack-in-the-box toy from the 1500s. Consequently, many fans believe this choice reflects the original purpose of the Mimic: to bring joy and entertain children. However, that innocent intent was ultimately shattered. Therefore, the most widely accepted interpretation is that the clown’s appearance symbolizes a tragic inversion, transforming a figure of happiness into a terrifying monster.
If you’ve read the book Five Nights at Freddy’s: Tales from the Pizzaplex, you might recall Jackie, the Clown. At one point in the storyline, the Mimic disguises itself as a clown. It uses Jackie as its persona or costume, similar to how it uses the Mascots. In the new game, you will encounter various forms, from the clown to his original metallic figure.
