Vocations in the Dragon’s Dogma series are character classes that players can pick for their character, and Dragon’s Dogma 2 has overhauled this system to make way for a more immersive one.
Every RPG has character classes and the Dragon's Dogma series is no different. The character classes in Dragon's Dogma 2 are called vocations and the game has a diverse system for players to explore. Dragon's Dogma 2 has 10 different vocations for players to choose from.
And they can even select the vocation for their pawns. Dragon's Dogma had nine vocations, so there's one more in the sequel. That's just at the surface of things, however. The sequel has some different vocations from the first game.
List of starting vocations in Dragon's Dogma 2
Dragon's Dogma 2 has four starting vocations. These vocations are available not just for the main character but also for their main pawns. Players start the game by creating a character that is customized for any one of these vocations.
- Fighter - Excels at melee combat and performs well with hand-to-hand weapons such as swords and shields.
- Archer - Archers are, as the name suggests, long-range specialists. They're great with ranged weapons and can attack targets that are otherwise unreachable for melee characters.
- Thief - These are agile fighters wielding light weapons such as knives and daggers. They're also capable of stealing loot from NPCs and enemy characters.
- Mage - Mages are essentially magic wielders that can provide support to their party in the form of magic attacks on opponents, healing allies or enchanting allied weapons for combat bonuses.
What are advanced vocations?
Advanced vocations are essentially more powerful versions of the starting vocations. These are available to players in the game at a later stage for their main character or pawns. They can be accessed when the player has advanced enough in the game.
- Warrior - Warriors are powerful melee combatants capable of handling two-handed melee weapons. These include greatswords and battle axes, and equip extremely heavy armor to mitigate incoming damage.
- Sorcerer - Sorcerers are powerful mages capable of using advanced spells that can create game-changing moments. The caveat is that their spells take time to charge, leaving them vulnerable to attack.

Does Dragon's Dogma 2 have hybrid vocations?
Yes, players aren't just going to be stuck to their starting vocations in the game. They can select hybrid vocations as long as they advance enough into the game and build their character for it.
The catch is that these vocations are only available to the arisen (the player's main character), and not their pawns. The designated hybrid vocations in the game are as follows:
- Magick Archer - As the name suggests, Magick Archers are powerful archers that can use magical arrows to provide long-range support to their parties. They're also capable of attacking and healing using magic spells. They have a powerful AOE attack that deals damage at the cost of their own HP.
- Mystic Spearhand - Mystic Spearhand characters use a special weapon called the Duospear. They're effective at melee as well as magic combat and the Duospear is a balanced weapon effective at all ranges. They're capable of paralyzing opponents or hurling objects at them.
- Trickster - Tricksters use a unique weapon called the censer, which casts smoke around an area of effect. These characters can cast illusions into the smoke created by the weapon to confuse opponents and make them attack each other. They're also capable of increasing the power of their pawns.
- Warfarer - The Warfarer is the Dragon's Dogma 2 variant of a jack of all trades, master of none. Characters that choose to build for this vocation have low base stats and are capable of using abilities and weapons across all other vocations. Their capability to wield almost all weapons in the game makes them unique and versatile.
Overall, Dragon's Dogma 2 features a diverse range of vocations and a system that expands on the first game in a unique direction. Players can customize their playstyle effectively and this diversity makes for excellent replayability. Especially considering players can also choose the vocation for their pawns.
