Everything we know about the next installment in the RuneScape franchise.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is the next chapter in the storied RuneScape franchise. Up until this point, RuneScape had solely consisted of separate MMORPGs that feature similar gameplay, but are vastly different in terms of graphics, mechanics, and how they are developed.

With Dragonwilds, developer Jagex is taking a step into an entirely different realm. Dragonwilds is an open world survival game that is set in the same universe as the RuneScape MMORPGs but features all-new gameplay, narratives, and mechanics. RuneScape and gaming fans in general will surely be enticed by the upcoming survival game, but what do we know about it so far?

Read below to find out the release date for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, what the game is, and how you can play it.

What is the release date for RuneScape: Dragonwilds?

At this point, there is no concrete release date for RuneScape: Dragonwilds. All we know is that Jagex is planning to launch the game in early access sometime in spring 2025. This could be as early as April or as late as May-June.

With the recent gameplay trailers just being unveiled at the end of March, however, you can likely expect a release date sometime after April. This is also backed up by the gameplay demo that's being shown off by Jagex on April 15. You can tune into that by going to the official Twitch channel for Dragonwilds.

With the game launching in early access, we don't have a timeline for the full release of Dragonwilds. Hopefully, Jagex will delve more into the game's timeline after it's launched in the spring.

What kind of game is RuneScape: Dragonwilds?

Dragonwilds is described as a co-operative open world survival game that emphasizes crafting, gathering, and building. From the early screenshots and gameplay we've seen of the game, it looks as though you'll be able to follow the classic survival gameplay loop of gathering resources and using them to build a base or craft additional supplies you need to survive against enemies or the world itself.

Similarly to how the RuneScape MMORPGs operate, it appears you can chop wood, mine rocks, and use forms of magic to gather the resources you need.

We don't know how the game is going to implement set skills like Old School RuneScape and RuneScape 3 use, but it's a strong bet that Dragonwilds will incorporate something similar to aid your character's progression.

In addition to gathering resources, building a base also seems to be a point of emphasis in Dragonwilds. The early screenshots show what the base building looks like, and there seems to be robust mechanics in place that allow you to orient the different structures you're placing down. We'll have to wait and see more before we know just how much you can build in Dragonwilds.

Aside from the survival game basics we've gone over, Dragonwilds will also follow a story centered around the Dragon Queen. The game is set on the lost continent of Ashenfall, which is a part of RuneScape lore, and dragons have been awakened. It's your job to piece together secrets to uncover the mystery behind the Dragon Queen and defeat her.

It's unknown how the story elements will play out, but RuneScape is no stranger to long and in-depth quests, so it's a safe bet that's how Dragonwilds could operate with its storytelling.

How to play RuneScape: Dragonwilds

At launch, Dragonwilds is only coming to PC via Steam. However, the developers have teased that the game could come to consoles eventually, which would be a first for the RuneScape franchise. We'll have to wait and see if any more information is revealed on this front.

As for PC players, you can wishlist the game on Steam now. We don't know the up-front cost of Dragonwilds, if there is one, or if there is going to be a membership system similar to what we see in the RuneScape MMORPGs.

And that's all we currently know about RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The next look we have at the game is on April 15 via the Dragonwilds Twitch channel. In the meantime, you can read up on the game's minimum and recommended PC specs to make sure your system can run it.
