Can you play Nightreign as a solo player?
Elden Ring Nightreign is the next installment of the famed RPG franchise set in the Living Lands. However, this time around, the game has changed dramatically, and instead of traversing through an open world, you're participating in a three-player roguelite version of Elden Ring. It's a completely different experience from the last time around, and with the new three-player party system in place, players are asking if it's even possible to play Elden Ring Nightreign as a solo player.
Below, we'll tell you everything we've learned in our early time with the game and how to play solo.
Playing Elden Ring Nightreign as a solo player
Fortunately, it is completely possible to play Elden Ring Nightreign solo. You don't have to play with two other players in your party, and instead, you can take on the challenges of the Living Lands by yourself as a lone ranger.

However, playing solo isn't what the developers envisioned when they were developing Nightreign. The game is intended to be a cooperative experience that you go through with other players. This is why, by default, you'll be thrust into the matchmaking system when choosing to go on an expedition. Of course, you can also join or create a party for you and up to two other friends so you can all play together.
Whether you don't have any friends playing Nightreign or you don't want to rely on players in the matchmaking system, though, you can choose a solo option.

How to play Elden Ring Nightreign solo
To start an expedition as a solo player, follow these steps:
- At the Roundtable Hold, approach the central table and interact with it to "Commence Expedition"
- This will bring up the boss and matchmaking menu. From here, you want to tab over to the Matchmaking Settings menu from the boss screen
- In Matchmaking Settings, go all the way down to the end of the menu and change the "Expedition Type" from "multiplayer" to "singleplayer"
- Now, you can return to the boss screen, and you'll see the option to commence a solo expedition. If you press that button, you'll spawn into a map as a solo player without any other players alongside you
- To change back to a multiplayer expedition, simply return to the Matchmaking Settings menu and switch the Expedition Type again

Now, just because you can play Elden Ring Nightreign solo doesn't mean it's going to be the best option for you. As we said previously, Nightreign was intended to be played in a party of three. You'll find that the game is especially challenging towards the end of expeditions, and often two, three, or even four bosses need to be defeated to complete a run.
While you can defeat these bosses as a solo player with enough skill, you're making things quite difficult on yourself. It's also nice to have the help of other players to secure runes for you, as every enemy they defeat gives you runes and even some loot in the case of bosses.
To sum up, having two other players alongside you in Elden Ring Nightreign really isn't too much of a hassle, as they're able to revive you and make your expeditions far easier. You don't even need to stick near the other players in your party until the end of a run when the zone gets down to a tiny space.
So, while you can play Elden Ring Nightreign solo, it's usually best to stick with the multiplayer expedition type to have the best chance of surviving an expedition and defeating bosses. Of course, if you simply want to explore the map, test out a character or build, or check something out, playing solo is an option that's freely available to you at all times.
