The vending machines are alive and well in Borderlands 4.
Vend of the Line is a side quest you can take on once you reach the Carcadia region of the map in Borderlands 4. This side quest involves tracking down codes from specific vending machines around the region to locate the mysterious "legendary vault" that Vault-Gatherers have been seeking for years. However, the codes from the vending machines aren't given to you for free, as you first need to input a code into the machine for it to give you one in return.
Specifically, there's one vending machine that's been giving players trouble in Borderlands 4. Fortunately, you can see how to find and input the code for the vending machines in Vend of the Line below.
How to input codes in Vend of the Line in Borderlands 4
For the most part, you'll be able to find codes to input into the vending machine on the back of the machines themselves. The code will consist of ordered and colored question marks, which let you know what rarity of items to sell and what order to sell them to the vending machine.
For example, if a vending machine has a "green, purple, blue, green" question mark order on the back of the machine, you need to sell a green, purple, blue, and green item to the machine in that order. However, as you'll quickly find out, there's more to the codes than simply selling certain items.
The most difficult vending machine code to figure out in Vend of the Line is located just west of Carcadia in the Ruined Sumplands. You'll find the vending machine on the second floor of a ruined building next to a locked chest.
To view the back of this vending machine, head around back to the other side of the building and peek through the hole in the wall. You'll see that the code is "green, purple, blue, green." You'll also notice that the question marks don't have any circles with lines through them, though, which is different from the other vending machine codes you've seen up to this point.
That's because when the question marks don't have circles with lines through them, you need to sell the machine the ordered items and then buy them back in that same order. So, to solve this vending machine's code, you have to:
- Sell the vending machine a green, purple, blue, and green item in that order
- Go to the "Buyback" tab and buy back those same items in the same order (green, purple, blue, green)
- The vending machine will give you the code now
Once you have the code, you can head out to the other vending machines and retrieve their codes. If a vending machine has question marks with circles and lines through them, then you don't have to buy back the items you sold to the machine. However, if a code has question marks by themselves with no circles, then you have to buy the items back.
As long as you follow those guidelines, you'll complete the Vend of the Line side quest with no problem in Borderlands 4.
