A Sleep Mode setting is coming to Fortnite.

Fortnite's next significant Chapter 5 Season 4 update goes live on Oct. 1. While Epic Games has kept the details mostly under wraps, the Fortnite developers have confirmed a Sleep Mode setting will debut in patch v31.30. This new setting aims to keep your teammates informed when you're away from your keyboard or controller. Here's how it works.

How does Sleep Mode work in Fortnite?

This new setting, set to debut in Fortnite v31.30, will activate automatically when you step away from your setup. By default, it will begin after 15 minutes of inactivity, informing your teammates that you stepped away. Once Sleep Mode is active, it pauses your voice chat and cancels matchmaking until you return.

Can I disable this setting?

Based on the Fortnite Status post, it does not appear that you can completely turn Sleep Mode off. Instead, you adjust the timer to what works best for you. Do you think you might be stepping away for longer than 15 minutes and want to prevent your game from going to sleep? Your best bet is to adjust the setting until you get it right. However, Epic may include a toggle to turn this setting off entirely.

Are there potential issues with Fortnite's Sleep Mode setting?

Many commenters have said this update was not necessary and could create issues. For one, many players will step away from their setup to eat or do something else while queuing into a game. However, the adjustable timer should alleviate those issues. This new setting should not create too many problems for players unless there are bugs.

Fortnite tournament players would be wise to adjust their Sleep Mode settings once the v31.30 update goes live on Oct. 1. Otherwise, it could cancel a tournament queue and give you less time to play as many matches as possible. Update v31.30 will likely be the final patch before Fortnitemares 2024, so check back here for all the latest!
