Is LEGO Fortnite a separate game, or the same old Fortnite with a new lick of paint? We answer that question and more!

Fortnite’s LEGO mode released on December 7 to hype and excitement from the Fortnite, LEGO, and general gaming fandoms. A unique survival crafting experience with LEGO-theming, LEGO Fornite is set to be an obsession for players this holiday season. But one question wracking the brains of Fortnite players is whether LEGO Fortnite is it’s own game, a stand-alone new title, or a game mode. Here’s the answer:

Is LEGO Fortnite a separate game?

LEGO Fortnite is not a separate game from Fortnite, rather it’s a new game mode within Fortnite. Confusingly, LEGO Fortnite sits separately in the Epic Games Store, but a quick click on it reveals that it’s not a stand-alone game, and needs the base Fortnite game installed to play it. You’ll need to make sure you’ve installed both Fortnite, Fortnite Battle Royale, and LEGO Fortnite to play the latter game mode.

What is LEGO Fortnite?

LEGO Fortnite is a collaboration between LEGO and Epic Games to create a survival crafting game, similar to Minecraft, Rust, or similar titles.

Perhaps ironically, LEGO Fortnite is very similar to Fortnite’s survival crafting game mode, Fortnite: Save the World. This was the original version of Fortnite, and wasn’t a battle royale, but was instead a survival shooter. LEGO Fortnite has revived this survival gameplay with a brand new collaboration.

According to a press release on the official LEGO website: “The game utilizes World Partition to stream all 95 square kilometers of playable space (that’s 19x the size of the Fortnite Battle Royale Island!), and uses the Procedural Content Generation (PCG) framework to dynamically create detailed environments.”

“As part of the launch for LEGO Fortnite, four giant LEGO brick-built Supply Llamas have popped up in New York, London, Tokyo and Sydney – each standing 12-feet tall and made up of 234,623 LEGO bricks, weighing 1019kg and having been built using over 850+ man hours. Fans that visit the Llamas during launch weekend can take part in fun family building activities, whilst supplies last.”

Is LEGO Fortnite like Minecraft?

In short: Yes! LEGO Fortnite really does remind us a lot of Minecraft. Its got survival crafting, and uses LEGO Bricks. What’s more, LEGO has put out multiple Minecraft-themed sets, so there’s something that feels just right about a LEGO survival crafting game mode. It’s not quite an official LEGO Minecraft game, but it’s almost there.
