The game takes the subgenre of platformer fighters to the next level.

Trying to compete with such legendary titles as Super Smash Bros. and Brawlhalla is a brave move for any game. Still, MultiVersus has good reasons for this ambition. In fact, it delivers something new and exciting for every gamer to enjoy. Let’s figure out why MultiVersus is so special! In this post, we highlight the gameplay, reveal a detailed character list, explain in-game currencies, and mention future esports tournaments.

When is the MultiVersus release date?

The game was available for around a year in its pre-release version in 2022 and 2023. MultiVersus even got two content seasons with new characters. After this period ended, the online servers shut down for quite a while. Now, we know the final release date. MultiVersus is coming out on May 28, 2024.

The differences between the open beta and final version include visual improvements, better online netcode for smooth connections, a wider variety of attacks in move sets, new stages, and more characters. In addition to the multiplayer PvP mode, MultiVersus has a PvE mode.

What platform is MultiVersus on?

MultiVersus is a free-to-play game. It’s available on consoles and computers.

  • PlayStation 4 and 5
  • Xbox Series S/X and Xbox One
  • PC via Steam and Epic Games Store

MultiVersus guide: Gameplay

On the one hand, MultiVersus is a classic platformer fighter. The characters stand on floating platforms, and their goal is to kick opponents off into the abyss. This concept affects the movement quite significantly, as in the platformer fighting genre, you should jump a lot to be able to survive off the platforms. Double jumps are good for this. Also, the characters have special recovery moves to boost themselves back to the platforms.

MultiVersus has a traditional input pattern: Light and Special attacks that are neutral and with directional input. Usually, the initial damage is built with Light attacks, and then Special moves launch opponents to the point of non-recovery. The higher the numbers under characters, the greater the opponents' chances of knocking them out.

What makes MultiVersus really special?

Unlike its direct competitors, this game strongly emphasizes team fights, making 2v2 mode the primary one. Sure, it also has 1v1 fights. But the very character move sets have been created with 2v2 mechanics in mind.

For example, there are support characters in MultiVersus, and their key feature is to keep teammates on the platforms during risky moves. Naturally, there are high-risk, high-reward fighters who require support to be safer to play.

Team mechanics are strongly based on character classes, but players are not limited to a specific structure. All sorts of team compositions are possible. Communication between players becomes crucial for high-level fights.

In addition to this, players can customize their characters with Perks, which are unique passive abilities. This opens even more options to create team synergy and, of course, some spectacular and devastating team combos.

The official launch trailer was published on May 20. In the cinematic video, we can see many game characters, including two new teases: Agent Smith from The Matrix and Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th.

MultiVersus guide: How to unlock characters

It’s a free-to-play game that comes with some free characters for everyone. The only problem is that you cannot keep them forever — MultiVersus features a weekly rotation, which is inconvenient for serious players. You need time to learn moves and adjust your personal and team habits to specific characters.

Still, MultiVersus doesn’t force players to buy characters for real-world money.

  • Gold is an in-game currency that's used to buy MultiVersus characters. It can be earned by simply playing the game. Also, gold is used to buy Perks.

So, to unlock characters in MultiVersus, play the game, earn gold, and buy fighters in the internal shop.

MultiVersus guide: How to buy MultiVersus skins

Like other free-to-play games, MultiVersus sells many cosmetic items such as character skins, banners, player icons, taunts, emotes, and others.

  • Gleamium is a MultiVersus currency that costs real-world money.

You have to be careful with your expenses as it is almost impossible to buy every cosmetic in such a game. And MultiVersus skins are really good!

Season Pass

Even during the open beta, we had two seasons in MultiVersus. The tradition continues with the full release.

The Season Pass in this game has free and premium tiers with different progression rewards. The Premium MultiVersus Season Pass is available for Gleamium. Rewards in the Season Pass include various cosmetics. The items are unique, and they can be obtained only in this way.

MultiVersus esports

The competitive part is important for all fighting games, and MultiVersus is no exception. The game was highlighted at Evo 2022, the biggest esports event in the fighting games community (FGC).

After the full release, the game should make it to big events as well. MultiVersus' esports success directly depends on the developers’ efforts to make it fairly balanced with deep mechanics like long combos and various team strategies. All of the MultiVersus tournaments can be checked out on start.gg.
