The BAT error in Destiny 2 is an annoying one, but there may be a way to fix it.

You've sat down and logged onto Destiny 2. Your build ready, you drop straight into a Grandmaster Nightfall or a raid with friends — only to be kicked to the start screen with a big BAT error code.

Here's what the BAT error code means in Destiny 2 and a few fixes you can try.

Error code BAT is caused by poor connection quality between your device and the Destiny 2 servers. This error pops up most often when searching for an activity or shortly after an update/maintenance.

In the help page for the BAT error code, Bungie describes the problem as a "general networking error" but doesn't give much information about its cause. This error isn't always something you can control. The issue may be on Bungie's end, as has been seen after a major expansion release due to an influx of players.

As a result, the issue may be out of your hands and you'll have to wait for Bungie to fix the problem on their end. But what if it's not Bungie? There are a few ways to test whether the BAT error is on your end.

We always recommend attempting a game restart before proceeding with any other fix. If you're still encountering BAT errors in Destiny 2, here are a few things you can try:

  • Switch internet connections. Try a mobile hotspot or an alternate connection — if the errors cease, there may a a problem with your main connection.
  • Switch from a wireless to a wired connection. A direct line is always going to be more consistent than a wireless connection which may experience dropouts. Where possible, connect your device directly to the internet via Ethernet.
  • Restart your modem. Switch off your modem at the power, wait a few seconds, then switch it back on. Reconnect and attempt to launch Destiny 2.
  • Check the Bungie Help page or the X/Twitter account for Destiny 2 to confirm there isn't an ongoing outage. Bungie will inform players of issues on their end via these channels first.
  • Wait a while. If the issue is on Bungie's end, you'll have no other option than to wait until the BAT errors are fixed on the server.
