Ygwulf committed a murder, but do you kill him in return?
Just hours into Avowed, and you're murdered. A poison arrow pierces your heart and for a moment, it looks like you're finished. By the grace of godliness, though, you come back to life and get the rare chance to figure out who killed you. After some detective work, you discover that a Paradisan rebel named Ygwulf is responsible for your murder in Avowed.
Eventually, you travel through the lower cisterns of Paradis and confront Ygwulf, much to his surprise. He thought he was doing the work of the gods by killing you, but it's clear the gods want you alive, and now Ygwulf is ready to throw himself at the mercy of your sword. However, should you really kill Ygwulf, or does sparing him make your story play out better in Avowed?
Learn about both choices and which one you should make in the guide below.
Choosing to kill Ygwulf in Avowed
First off, let's start with the most obvious choice: killing Ygwulf. After all, he killed you so it's only right that you return the favor by ending his life. This is the option your companions will agree with, especially Marius, but it, naturally, leads to some bloodshed.

If you decide to kill Ygwulf, you have to contend with him and every one of the rebels that are surrounding him in the cistern. Ygwulf himself is a tough enemy, but you should be able to get through it with a decent weapon and armor. However, if beating the enemies leading up to Ygwulf was extremely difficult for you to get past, you might not want to start a brawl with Ygwulf and his comrades.
After Ygwulf is dead, you can go back to the Ambassador and confirm the death. This makes the Ambassador pleased, as it strengthens Aedyr's hold on Paradis. The leader of the rebels is dead, so the rebels now have more reason to fear Aedyr. However, this can have some ramifications later on in Avowed, as you can run into Paradisan rebels who know that you were the one to kill Ygwulf. They'll be especially hostile towards you.
Other than that, though, nothing else comes as a result of killing Ygwulf.

Choosing to spare Ygwulf in Avowed
On the other hand, if you're feeling compassionate, you can freely decide to spare Ygwulf's life. You can tell the assassin that he deserves a second shot and you'll exit the cistern without shedding any additional bloodshed.
However, when you return to the Ambassador, this doesn't sit right with him. You can lie and say Ygwulf got away or tell the truth about sparing him, but neither option leads to a happy conversation. Still, though, the Ambassador still sends you on your next quest, which is outside of Dawnshore, and soon after, it's a forgotten fact that you spared Ygwulf.

In return for sparing Ygwulf, you'll receive a piece of Adra and 625 gold. So, not a bad payday for letting your murderer go without a scratch on their head.
All in all, the decision doesn't play a huge role in the story of Avowed. Whether Ygwulf lives or dies changes a few conversations, but ultimately doesn't have major ramifications for your story moving forward.
