How to switch between Yasuke and Naoe in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Assassin's Creed Shadows features two playable protagonists in Yasuke and Naoe. Initially when you start the game, you're introduced to Yasuke's character first. However, for all of the early game, you can only play as Naoe after Yasuke's brief introduction sequence. Naturally, Assassin's Creed Shadows players are wondering how you can switch between the two characters to play as both of them.

Well, I'll say that it's fully possible to play as either Yasuke or Naoe at any time. However, this only happens after you reach a specific point in the story, and that point is fairly far along. To see when you're able to switch between both characters and how to do it in Assassin's Creed Shadows, read the guide below.

The first question we need to answer is when the possibility to switch becomes something you can do in Assassin's Creed Shadows. Unfortunately, you have to wait quite a long time.

In my playthrough, it took roughly 13 hours of in-game playtime to unlock the ability to play as Yasuke and switch between characters. However, your experience may vary depending on how quickly you fly through the main story. I spent some time doing side activities, such as raiding castles and completing smaller quests, which led to a longer wait time before Yasuke became available.

If you roll right on through the main story without stopping to see any sights, though, you can likely unlock Yasuke in roughly 8-10 hours of in-game playtime. You'll know when Yasuke becomes available for you, as the game makes sure you have the ability to pick between either him or Naoe at the first opportunity (as you can see in the screenshot above).

Now that you know when you can start switching between the two characters, how can you actually swap back and forth between Yasuke and Naoe?

Well, there are a few ways to do it. The first is to open up your inventory and at the bottom of the screen, you'll see an option to "Play as Naoe/Yasuke." Hold that option and you'll immediately switch to the other character in the same location you're currently in.

The second is to simply open your map, select a fast travel destination, and then hover over it. You'll see that you can fast travel using your current character or fast travel using the other character. Both options require a different keybind, so make sure you're holding the right one for whichever character you want to use.

Alternatively, Assassin's Creed Shadows offers several chances to play as one character or the other during cutscenes and dialogue. Yasuke and Naoe each have different main story missions that they alone can complete, and the game ensures you have opportunities to play as both throughout the game.

The best way to switch is to either go through the inventory or fast travel and pick whatever character you're not currently using. Both options are quick and gets you to where you want to go without having to go through a long switching process.
