Here’s every materia weapon in the Apex Legends x FFVII crossover event, ranked! (Spoilers: Nessie always wins.)

We've ranked the Best Apex Legends Materia Weapons in the Final Fantasy takeover event, because not all weapons synergise with their new superpower.

In the LTM, Materia is a colorful type of hop-up that grants different abilities. One spawns murderous Nessies, another shocks your enemies with electricity, and another grants critical damage. Each materia only works on a few weapons, with some being more useful than others.

Materia Ranked overall

  1. Red
  2. Purple
  3. Green
  4. Blue
  5. Yellow

Otherwise carry on reading as we have ranked every single weapon on whether Materia makes or breaks it!

Blue Materia weapons (Best to worst)

Blue materia in Apex Legends grants the unique effect of healing you the more you damage enemies. Here are the six weapons that can equip this materia, ranked by how much this ability improves the weapon.

  1. Nemesis
  2. Hemlock
  3. Devotion
  4. 30-30
  5. Wingman
  6. Mastiff

The top three of these rankings are simply guns that are practically broken due to how powerful they are. Having the extra advantage of gaining health as you shred enemy shields like tissue paper is just the cherry on top.

The 30-30 only ranks slightly below due to its slower rate of fire, but it too can feel incredibly powerful with blue materia. The Wingman and Mastiff are essentially tied, as the blue materia doesn’t especially enhance either weapon.

Green Materia weapons (Best to worst)

Green materia is usually associated with lightning which in Apex Legends translates to a burst of electricity around you whenever you reload an empty weapon.

  1. Alternator
  2. Prowler
  3. Volt
  4. EVA-8
  5. L-Star
  6. Triple Take

The lightning effect is very fun but, admittedly, slightly limited by how close you are to an enemy. That’s why the Triple Take brings up the bottom of the list, due to its long range making the effect almost useless.

Unless you’re trying to take an up-close Triple Take fight, in which case, I salute you. On the other hand, the Alternator, Prowler, and Volt are all some of the best short range guns in the game already. The additional burst of power for up close fights is a great way to gain an edge.

Red Materia weapons (Best to worst)

Without a doubt, the Red materia is the best hop-up in the entire game. If you’re not aware of what this hop-up does, then you’re missing out. Each weapon you have with Red Materia spawns a Nessie strapped with the iconic Final Fantasy sword. The Nessies squeak, they hop, they waddle, and they ruthlessly chase down your enemies.

  1. Havoc
  2. RE-45
  3. Kraber
  4. Mozambique
  5. P2020

This list is mostly based on availability, which is why the Havoc and the RE-45 make the top two spots. While the Kraber may be the most fun to use, especially with a Nessie to guide your shots, it’s not always easily accessible. For obvious reasons, the P2020 is at the bottom on the list alongside the Mozambique. However, the Mozam will always be number one in our hearts.

Yellow Materia weapons

Of all the different materia, this one is by far the least fun. While seeing an enemy's health can be useful for tactical engagements, that’s just not what this FF takeover is all about. This event is about hordes of Nessies roaming the map like hunting dogs while R301’s hit critical damage every three shots.

  1. G7 Scout
  2. Sentinel
  3. Rampage
  4. Peacekeeper
  5. R-99
  6. Charge Rifle

This ranking is based on how well the materia improves a weapon, so that is why the Charge Rifle is on the bottom. Nothing can improve that gun. May it burn in hell.

As for the top rankings, the G7 Scout and Sentinel are weapons that, if you can always hit your shots, benefit from knowing how close an enemy is to death. The mid-range rankings are made up of close-range guns, which don’t really benefit from the knowledge as much.

Purple Materia weapons (Best to worst)

The purple materia is one of the better hop-ups in this Apex Legends x FFVII event. The power is simple; some of your shots will randomly hit critical damage. This gives you an insane advantage in any fight, especially since the critical damage catches so many players off guard.

Most Apex Legends players have a natural sense of how quickly they’ll be downed by certain weapons. So when the CAR, Spitfire, Flatline, and R-301 rip through them even faster than expected, it can cause some rage.

  1. R-301
  2. Flatline
  3. CAR
  4. Bocek
  5. Longbow
  6. Spitfire

If we're being completely honest, the R-301 and the Flatline are basically tied in this ranking. Both are extremely consistent guns that have easy recoil patterns, which makes it easy to hit those critical damage shots. Additionally, the CAR can absolutely melt a player normally, so the added damage makes it almost unbeatable at close range.

The bottom half of the rankings are made up of the weapons that, while definitely improved by purple materia, just don’t hit as well as the top half. The Bocek with extra critical damage is a menace when you can get your hands on it.

The Longbow is also improved by this hop-up, especially compared to the other snipers that got the lesser yellow materia. The Spitfire finishes in last because of its slow rate of fire, which just makes it a lesser pick compared to the heavy hitters in this list.

Ranking round-up

Those are the rankings of every weapon in each materia class! Overall, the red and purple materia weapons are first choice, no matter where they rank on this list, purely because those hop-ups are so powerful and fun. Green and blue add a lot of fun into your gameplay too, though with less Nessies. Yellow really just shows you how the game would be if every Legend had Vantage’s passive so it’s a bit of a letdown.
