A close look at Punk’s epic comeback to win the NA East CPT Online Grand Finals

Punk’s victory at CPT NA East was glorious. A comeback for the ages and one which was worth a closer look at by SFV caster and Esports.GG’s Logan Sama.

A thrilling weekend for NA Street Fighter V

This past weekend July 31st to August 1st , arguably the strongest Street Fighter V player in the world Punk, booked his spot at the prestigious Capcom Cup VIII by besting the rest of the field in the CPT NA East. That included New York’s favourite and former Capcom Cup 2019 champ, iDom.

Their rivalry is relatively new when put alongside the likes of Daigo and Alex Valle dating back 3 decades now, but the title of strongest player in America is fiercely debated online by both players’ fanbases. In what I would personally argue as the greatest set of Street Fighter V played in this recent 2 years of online competition, the two East Coast titans clashed in a set that saw the game played at the very highest level.

Punk was taking no chances this time after his loss to iDom in the Intel World Open only a few weeks ago, citing the poor connection between NY and his new residence of Florida as the deciding factor between the two. He travelled back to his family home in Philadelphia to ensure nothing would come between him and a clean run at a Capcom Cup spot at the first time of asking.

Punk qualifies for Capcom Cup VIII in style

After Punk soundly defeated iDom in the Winners Final, they met again in Grand Final with Punk having the winner’s advantage. When iDom reset the bracket and then took a 2-0 lead in the following set, even Punk had to acknowledge how well his opponent was playing and that he might have come to the end of his run….

But in one of the greatest comebacks in Street Fighter V history, Punk was victorious 3-2 and he will be the first of two East Coast players representing the region at Capcom Cup VIII. I took a deep dive in to the head to head rivalry, the opening Winners Final and then the epic comeback in the Grand Final with additional insight from Punk himself. And be sure to look out for a full length interview with Punk coming very soon as well!
