New paintings added to Minecraft for the first time in over a decade

We’ve been waiting since 2012!

New paintings are making their way into Minecraft for the first time since 2012. The works of art will arrive as part of the Tricky Trials update scheduled for mid-2024.

Mojang is notorious for taking extremely long to make any changes to the mostly timeless game of Minecraft. Even community engagements like their famous mob vote are met with differing opinions.

Paintings in particular have remained untouched for quite some time. The last painting to be added, the Wither, was part of Java update 1.4.2 on October 25, 2012. It's no exaggeration to say it's been a while.

Minecraft contains many of gaming's most beloved and iconic artworks in the form of paintings. These items are almost exclusively decorative and come in various shapes and sizes, which are randomly determined upon placing the painting on a wall.

New paintings in Mincreaft like the ones announced today won't revolutionize the meta or anything. However, players of the creativity-inspiring game will no doubt welcome the additional decor options.

In a tweet earlier today, Minecraft announced the addition of 15 new paintings as a celebration of the game's 15th anniversary. However, they then revealed in an article that the total number of new paintings coming to Minecraft is actually 20.

The 15 new paintings announced and teased in the Tweet were all created by Kristoffer Zetterstrand. Hailing from Sweden and graduating from the Royal College of Art in Stockholm, he's been working at his own studio since 2001.

Zetterstrand is no stranger to Mojang's hit sandbox game. He was approached by Mojang during early development and is the artist behind the majority of Minecraft's current paintings.

The five remaining new paintings coming to Minecraft are by in-house artist Sarah Boeving. In total, these new additions nearly double the total number of Minecraft paintings up to 46.
